Review Moderation

Overview

The Review Moderation settings help you control what gets published on your storefront and who receives review requests. Use these settings to keep your reviews trustworthy, reduce unwanted requests, and prevent inappropriate content from appearing on your store.

With moderation, you can:

  • Automatically publish reviews or require manual approval
  • Filter inappropriate language in review text
  • Stop review requests for specific customers (by Shopify customer tags)
  • Stop review requests for specific products
All settings in this page affect how reviews appear on your storefront and/or how review request emails are sent. Changes apply going forward (they won’t rewrite past reviews automatically).

Where to find these settings

Go to:

Rivyo → Reviews → Collect Reviews → Publishing and Moderation

Profanity Filter

The Profanity Filter automatically detects and handles inappropriate language in customer reviews. When it’s enabled, Rivyo scans the review text for blocked words and then takes action based on the option you choose.

Enable the profanity filter

Go to Rivyo → Reviews → Collect Reviews → Publishing and Moderation. Enable Enable Profanity Filter. Select the option that matches your store’s moderation style (see below). Make sure your settings are saved before leaving the page.

Profanity filter options

Option 1 — Replace banned words

Blocked words are masked with asterisks so the review can still be published while hiding offensive terms.

Example

This product is sh**!

The review remains visible, but the inappropriate word is hidden.

Option 2 — Hide review

If a review contains blocked words, it will not be published. This prevents inappropriate content from appearing on your store.

If you choose Hide review, some legitimate reviews may be held back if they include words your customers use in a non-offensive way (for example, slang or product-related terms). Review your blocked word list periodically.

Default block list

Rivyo includes a standard list of blocked words to help filter common offensive language. You can customize it to better match your brand voice and audience.

  • Use the default list as-is
  • Add custom banned words (recommended if you sell in multiple languages or have niche terms)
  • Remove words if they cause false positives for your products
If you sell internationally, add common profanity variations in the languages your customers use. Customers often misspell or space out words to bypass filters—include common variations you see in your reviews.

Auto-Publish Reviews

Auto-Publish Reviews controls whether new reviews appear on your storefront immediately or only after you approve them.

Choose how reviews are published

Go to Rivyo → Reviews → Collect Reviews → Publishing and Moderation. Locate the Auto-Publish Reviews setting. Choose one of the options below.

Available options

  • All — All reviews are published automatically (no manual review needed).

This is best if you want feedback to appear quickly and you already have strong controls in place (like a profanity filter).

  • Manual approval — Reviews require approval before they appear on your storefront.

This is best if you want tighter control over review quality, tone, and content.

A common setup is Manual approval while your store is new (or during a major launch), then switching to All once you’re confident your moderation rules are working well.

Tag Blocklist (Exclude customers from review requests)

The Tag Blocklist lets you prevent review request emails from being sent to customers who have specific Shopify customer tags.

This is useful if you want to exclude customers such as:

  • Wholesale or B2B buyers (for example, tagged wholesale)
  • Test orders (for example, tagged test)
  • Staff, influencers, or brand partners (for example, tagged staff, affiliate)
  • Customers you already handle through a separate feedback process (for example, tagged vip)

How it works

  • If a customer’s Shopify profile contains any blocked tag, Rivyo will skip sending review request emails to that customer.
  • This affects future review requests; it does not retract emails that were already sent.

Set up the Tag Blocklist

Go to Rivyo → Reviews → Collect Reviews → Publishing and Moderation. Locate the Tag Blocklist section. Add the exact Shopify customer tags you want to exclude (for example: wholesale, test). Save your changes. Tags must match the customer tags used in Shopify. If you use uppercase/lowercase inconsistently in Shopify, standardize your tags to avoid missed matches.

Product Blocklist (Exclude products from review requests)

The Product Blocklist prevents review request emails from being sent for specific products. This is helpful when certain items should not trigger review requests (even if they were purchased).

Common examples:

  • Gift cards
  • Free samples
  • Digital downloads
  • Warranty or replacement items
  • Add-on items that don’t reflect the core purchase experience

What to expect

  • Blocked products won’t be included in review request emails.
  • If an order contains both blocked and non-blocked products, Rivyo can still request reviews for eligible items (depending on your email template and request setup).

Set up the Product Blocklist

Go to Rivyo → Reviews → Collect Reviews → Publishing and Moderation. Locate the Product Blocklist section. Select or enter the products you don’t want to send review requests for. Save your changes. Blocking a product affects review requests. It does not remove existing reviews that were already submitted for that product.

Recommended moderation setups

Goal: Get reviews on the storefront quickly with minimal manual work.

  • Auto-Publish Reviews: All
  • Profanity Filter: Replace banned words
  • Tag Blocklist: Block test, staff, wholesale (as needed)
  • Product Blocklist: Block gift cards, samples, replacements

Goal: Ensure every review matches your standards before it appears publicly.

  • Auto-Publish Reviews: Manual approval
  • Profanity Filter: Hide review
  • Tag Blocklist: Use to exclude internal/test/partner segments
  • Product Blocklist: Block items that don’t represent the main customer experience

Goal: Prevent low-quality or off-topic reviews while you fine-tune requests and templates.

  • Auto-Publish Reviews: Manual approval (temporarily)
  • Profanity Filter: Replace banned words (or Hide review if you want strict control)
  • Tag Blocklist: Block test and staff immediately
  • Product Blocklist: Block gift cards and replacements early
After you’ve processed a few weeks of reviews and adjusted your blocked words/tags/products, consider switching to All to reduce admin time.

Troubleshooting

  • If you use Manual approval, the review won’t show until you approve it.
  • If Profanity Filter is set to Hide review, the review may be hidden due to a blocked word.
  • Check whether the customer has a Shopify tag that is included in the Tag Blocklist.
  • Check whether the purchased product is included in the Product Blocklist.

Remove or adjust the word in your blocked list, then test again using a sample review that contains the term in context.

If a blocked term is part of a product name or common phrase in your niche, removing it can reduce false positives while keeping the rest of the filter active.
