How Customers Redeem Points

Overview

Customers can redeem loyalty points for rewards such as discounts, free shipping, free products, or store credit. After you create and enable rewards in Rivyo, eligible customers can view them on your storefront and redeem their points when they are ready.

Customers only see rewards that are available based on your current loyalty program setup and the number of points they have earned.

How customer redemption works

The customer journey is simple: earn points, view available rewards, and redeem points for a reward.

Customers build up points through the earning rules you have enabled in your loyalty program, such as:

  • Creating an account
  • Placing an order
  • Completing special actions like birthdays, newsletter signup, or social engagement

Customers open the loyalty or rewards section on your storefront to see what they can redeem.

They typically see:

  • The reward name
  • The number of points required
  • Whether they have enough points to redeem it
  • Buttons such as Join now, Log in, or a redeem action

When a customer chooses a reward, Rivyo deducts the required number of points and generates the reward based on the reward type you configured.

What customers see on the storefront

Your storefront loyalty widget or rewards page can show customers the full points program experience.

Where to set this up in Rivyo

To manage how customers redeem points:

  1. Go to Redeem points.
  2. Click Add way to redeem.

Set up a reward customers can redeem

In Rivyo, go to Redeem points and click Add way to redeem.

Add a clear reward title, choose the reward type, and set how many points the customer must spend.

Set the discount value, product or collection restrictions, expiry rules, and discount combination settings if available for that reward type.

Save your changes to add the reward to your list of redeem options.

Turn the reward on in the Redeem points list to make it visible to customers.

Use simple, benefit-focused reward names such as $10 off, Free shipping, or Free product. Clear titles help customers understand the value immediately.

Key reward settings explained

Reward title

This is the name customers see on the storefront, such as Get 50% Discount or Free Shipping Reward.

For X points

This determines how many points a customer must spend to redeem the reward.

Discount value

For discount rewards, this is the amount or percentage customers receive.

Minimum purchase value

You can require the customer to meet a minimum order amount before the reward can be applied.

Reward expiry

You can choose whether a redeemed reward never expires or expires after a set number of days.

Combine with other discounts

You can control whether the reward can be used together with:

  • Product discounts
  • Order discounts
  • Free shipping discounts

Applies to

You can choose whether the reward works on all products or only specific collections.

Purchase type

If supported in your store setup, you can choose whether the reward applies to:

  • One-time purchases
  • Subscriptions
  • Both

What happens after a customer redeems a reward

After redemption, the required points are removed from the customer’s balance and the reward is generated according to the reward type you selected.

  • For discount rewards, the customer receives a discount they can apply at checkout.
  • For free shipping, the customer receives a shipping-related reward if the order qualifies.
  • For free product rewards, the reward is tied to the configured product offer.
  • For store credit rewards, the customer receives the credit amount you set.
If you disable a reward, customers will no longer see it on the storefront, even if it was previously available.

Best practices

  • Create reward titles that clearly explain the benefit.
  • Set point values that feel achievable so customers stay motivated.
  • Offer a mix of lower-cost and higher-value rewards.
  • Use expiry settings carefully if you want to encourage faster redemption.
  • Review discount stacking rules to avoid combinations you do not want customers to use together.

Troubleshooting common issues

Check that the reward is enabled in Redeem points. Also confirm that your loyalty widget or rewards page is active on the storefront and that the customer is viewing the correct store page while logged in.

This usually means they do not have enough points yet, are not logged in, or the reward has conditions they do not meet, such as a minimum purchase requirement.

Review the reward’s Combine with other discounts settings. The reward may be intentionally restricted from stacking with certain discount types.

Check the Applies to setting. The reward may be limited to specific collections instead of all products.

Summary

To let customers redeem points, create a reward in Redeem points, configure its rules, save it, and enable it. Once active, customers can see the reward on your storefront, spend their points, and receive the benefit you configured.
